Elegant, effervescent and deliciously funny, this “Barber” is all new, and everything about it seems charmed. From director Emilio Sagi’s witty staging, to conductor Giuseppe Finzi’s flowing musical direction, and a strong, unified cast featuring two outstanding company debuts, the opening night performance Wednesday was an unqualified delight. Sagi’s production — co-owned by Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet, and making its premiere in San Francisco — replaces the company’s clunky, oversized former staging, last seen at the War Memorial in 2006. The director takes the opera’s Seville setting seriously. Llorenc Corbella’s set, a sleek white villa fitted with lacy wrought-iron gates, is bathed in sunlight and the occasional rainstorm (atmospheric lighting by Gary Marder.).

He’s waiting to die, he’s running into the fighting and wondering if he’ll survive. His perception of time becomes fragmented.”.
