He got his wish, after walking to the Center for Performing Arts, where San Jose Taiko played a short repertoire of Japanese-American rhythmic drumming interspersed with lessons on taiko technique, form, attitude and energy. The audience became a sea of waving hands when taiko players asked for volunteers onstage. “It was fun,” said Robert Tang, 9, of Stonegate School in San Jose, one of those chosen to learn a few taiko phrases. But beating the taiko, even for a minute, is hard work. “I got very tired,” said Colby Belford, 9, of Lietz Elementary in San Jose.
